Xperia Play Officially Announced
So, after months of leaks, the worst kept secret in the industry is officially revealed!
This device will no doubt be my next handheld phone. My iPhone 3G is unbelievably outdated, and I’m sick of iOS altogether, so going the Android route has been a no brainer. The only disappointment here is that the phone is actually not too powerful. It has a single core 1GHz processor, and with multi core processors coming out right now, its a bit underwhelming.. But the way I look at it, is that the need for more horsepower on phones is purely for the purpose of video games, and if I got one of the new phones with duel core chips that do NOT have the sliding out controller, then I’d barely play those games anyways, so whats the point? Sure, there are a few games that are fun that are only touch screen, but there haven’t been many that I’ve been a fan of. I guess since I was a hardcore fan of Nintendo and Sega growing up, the button controls appeal to me significantly more then touch based controls do. Emulated games on this thing is going to be fantastic =D
Also another positive is that Sony states the battery life will last 5.5 hours during gameplay — which is fantastic. It could be possible that Sony purposely did not include a duel core processor and a super beefy graphics card so that the battery on the phone could last a decent amount of time. I know some of the smartphones out there die pretty quickly while playing games, which is not handy when your portable gaming device also acts as your primary communication device. Another slight disappointment is that it does not have a NFC (Near Field Communication) chip, although I’m not too worried about that. Once the adoption rate by stores and other devices of NFC is adequate, then it’ll be time for an upgrade anyways! Until then, I will be very happy with a phone that is at least as powerful as the iPhone 4, with a Playstation controller, and Android 2.3!
I’ve included some pictures from Engadget for your viewing pleasure.
